With the 2025-26 School Year approaching, it is important to remember the rules of the road and keep our community a safe place for our awasisak.
STOP FOR SCHOOL BUSES- FLASHING RED MEANS STOP!
More than 700,000 students commute to schools every day in Alberta. We all need to do our part in keeping them safe.
Yellow flashing lights on a school bus mean SLOW DOWN — don’t speed up — because the bus is preparing to stop. There are likely students waiting to get on the bus or approaching a nearby drop-off point.
Red flashing lights mean STOP — and wait at least 20 feet behind the bus — because children are getting on or off the school bus. Stay stopped until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving.
Even when lights aren’t flashing, watch for children, particularly in the morning or mid-afternoon, around school arrival and dismissal times. Be alert as you back out of a driveway, or drive through a neighborhood, school zone or bus stop.
Parents – talk bus safety with your children, teach them to play it S.A.F.E. :
-(S)TAY five steps away from the curb.
-(A)LWAYS wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the bus driver signals for you to board.
-(F)ACE forward after finding a seat on the bus.
-(E)XIT the bus when it stops and look left-right-left for cars before crossing a street.
The speed limit for school zones in Alberta is 30 km/h. This means, that this speed limit is mandatory and must be obeyed during posted times. Hours vary for different towns and cities according to municipal bylaws, so be sure to check traffic rules in your community.
STAY ALERT, DRIVE SMART.
