Today, Nation Chiefs in Treaty No. 6, Leadership, and CFS Technicians gathered to voice their concerns and find resolutions on the upcoming Long-Term Reform of First Nations Family and Child Services. It allowed for Leadership to speak on the difficulties their own community may face with the current challenges and barriers in First Nations Child and Family Services. Some of the shared concerns raised in this gathering included the underfunding, cultural disconnects from their families and Nations, as well as systemic biases. The agencies frequently struggle with limited resources, inadequate support for culturally relevant practices, and high caseloads, which impact their ability to effectively support families and children in the system. Addressing these issues requires a multifaceted approach that includes increased funding, better integration of Indigenous Knowledge, and systemic reforms.
The Assembly of First Nation’s (AFN) will be hosting a Special Chief’s Assembly on October 16-18, 2024 in Calgary, AB (Treaty No. 7 territory) where Chiefs and Proxies will have an opportunity to deliberate and vote on the proposed reforms.
