The 79th session of the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on enhancing the participation of Indigenous Peoples in the United Nations system. The resolution is a commitment to continuing to establish further measures to ensure Indigenous Peoples across the world can effectively participate in decisions that affect them.
In presenting the resolution the Deputy Permanent Representative of Canada provided the following remarks:
‘The United Nations is committed to leaving no one behind. If we are to live by that principle, it is imperative that the voices of Indigenous Peoples, wherever they exist, are heard and contribute meaningfully to our collective efforts. As Dr. Wilton Littlechild has noted in past interactive hearings, “Indigenous Peoples have not come to the United Nations to create problems, but to create solutions”.’
