“Tansi, my name is Tina Johnson, IBSW, RSW. My primary role is a Mental Therapist with Maskwacis Counselling & Support Services for one-on-one counselling. I started August 21, 2023.
My education is IBSW (Indigenous Bachelor of Social Work), I convocated September 2020. I assist the IRS Department, with the Ambiguous Loss/ Mending Broken Hearts (grief recovery) and the NNADAP department with requirements for clients who wish to attend a Treatment Facility. I have taken the Training for Mending Broken Hearts for Youth and the Medicine Wheel & 12 Steps for Youth. As Indigenous people, I utilize the four quadrants of the Medicine Wheel; Mental, Emotional, Physical and Spiritual.
My therapy techniques are strength base, to find the positives in what is shared with me. Intergenerational Trauma has affected individuals in different ways. Habits are hard to break, change negative thoughts into positive. Learning “Who I Am” as an individual. Learning Self-care, learning to love yourself. Neyihew, four part being: Utilizing the four elements; Mother Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water. Taking the good of our cultural teachings.
The Ambiguous Loss and Mending Broken Hearts group program is great, when we have a loss we are told be strong, not to cry. This leads to stuffing our feelings. I believe tears are healing, it’s a way of releasing the emotions we bury. It’s okay to cry. I can also assist with one to one for privacy.”
Tina is available Monday-Friday from 9am-4pm. If you want to book an appointment to speak with MCSS Counsellor Tina, call 780-585-2268.
