On August 23, 1876, the Plains Cree, Woods Cree, Nakota Sioux, Saulteaux, and Dene people met with Crown representatives at Fort Carlton to enter into Treaty No. 6. The traditional name of Edmonton is amiskwaciwâskahikan, meaning Beaver Hills House, and is located on Treaty No. 6 territory.
Treaty No. 6 Recognition Day allows the City of Edmonton and Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations to commemorate the historic ties between the two, acknowledge the many contributions that Treaty No. 6 First Nations made in Edmonton’s founding and growth, and to come together in an act of reconciliation through a shared commitment to work positively together in a relationship founded on honour and respect.
It was an amazing honour for our Ermineskin Leadership to be apart of today’s Recognition Day.
