It was special to see the Wetaskiwin Sr. Mens Hockey Association, the Wetaskiwin Longhorns team, honouring the presence and contributions of First Nations players with a ceremonial puck-drop at the start of the game.
There are many First Nations players representing on both the Wetaskiwin Longhorns and Camrose Bruins teams playing in the following evening’s game.
Chief Joel Mykat from the Ermineskin Cree Nation accepted the honour and delivered the puck drop at the start of the game.
To the association and teams, your efforts to recognize and celebrate Indigenous cultures and contributions to the game are truly appreciated.
In the spirit of reconciliation it was a powerful way to bring people together and honour the shared values of respect, sportsmanship, and unity. Have a great season!
