Today was a truly special day at the University of Alberta. For the first time ever, the Treaty No. 6 flag and the Métis Settlement flag were raised on our campus. These important flags now fly proudly beside the Alberta and Canadian flags, showing respect for the Indigenous peoples and the land where our university stands.
The event brought together university leaders, members of Treaty 6, the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, the Métis community, and special guests including Lieutenant Governor Salma Lakhani and Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi. It was a powerful moment of unity, recognition, and celebration.
With the school year just beginning, this was the perfect time to reflect on where we’ve come from and where we’re going. We also celebrated the opening of the beautiful new University Commons—a place designed to bring people together and support everyone who learns, teaches, and works here. The building was created with care to reflect values like sustainability, inclusion, accessibility, and connection.
Thank you to everyone who made today so meaningful. It’s a proud moment for our university—a step forward in honouring Indigenous heritage and building a more inclusive future for all.
