Support letter sent May 20,2025 from the International Indian Treaty Council (IITC) to the leadership of Treaties 6, 7, and 8 to express solidarity with collective response rejecting Bill 54 and the Alberta Sovereignty Act.
“…we share this communication with you to express our solidarity with your collective response rejecting Bill 54 and the Alberta Sovereignty Act.
We support what many of your leaders have already expressed, your lands are Treaty lands, and no referendum can overturn the Treaties. As the IITC has stated many times, Treaties are considered a fundamental part of international law. They are often enshrined in national constitutions and are a supreme law of the land.
Recently, we have seen similar attacks on Indigenous sovereignty in Aotearoa (New Zealand), Australia, and in other parts of the world. IITC extends its solidarity with all Indigenous Peoples whose lands, territories and rights are under threat and we will continue to speak out against these injustices.
IITC is closely monitoring this situation in Canada and we stand ready to support and act as a resource in any way.”
IITC is an international organization of Indigenous Peoples from North, Central, South America, the Caribbean, Arctic and the Pacific working for the Sovereignty and Self Determination of Indigenous Peoples and the recognition and protection of their Rights, Treaties, Traditional Cultures, Sacred Lands and Waters.
Blackfoot Confederacy thanks IITC for their support. We stand united with Treaties 6,8 and all First Nations.
