On #IndigenousVeteransDay, we honour the bravery, service, and contributions made by First Nation, Inuit, and Métis Veterans. Though they often had to travel long distances or learn a new language to enlist, Indigenous Peoples have volunteered at impressive rates to support the Canadian military.
It’s important to acknowledge Indigenous Veterans did not always receive the same recognition for their service. When First-Nations Veterans returned home from WWI and WWII, many were not granted the same pensions, supports, or benefits offered to their non-Indigenous comrades. This made transitioning back to civilian life much more difficult.
On November 8th, we invite you to remember, reflect, and learn more about the history of Indigenous Veterans.
