On May 5, 2026, the Maskwacîs Curriculum team, supported by Learning Services colleagues, hosted a meaningful day of learning focused on Treaty Education for MESC school-based staff from Head Start to Grade 12. 📚
The day was planned to inform staff about the current Maskwacîs Treaty curriculum currently under development, with K–6 implementation beginning this fall. The PD reinforced the strength and importance of Treaty 6 while preparing teachers to guide and develop awâsisak and oskâyak’s knowledge, understanding, and responsibilities of Treaty relationships in their lives as future leaders. 🌱🪶
The morning began with a Pipe Ceremony, curriculum updates, and keynote presentations from Randy Ermineskin and Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse. 🧡
Randy Ermineskin shared teachings on the Spirit and Intent of Treaty 6, while Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse spoke on the importance of understanding our Treaty relationship and standing strong in the face of Alberta separatist threats. ✊🏽📖 Both speakers inspired and informed attendees with their knowledge, passion, and dedication to keeping our Treaties alive for future generations.
In the afternoon, a Living Library Môsôm and Kôhkom Tea was hosted. ☕ Community Elders and members gathered with K–6 teaching and support staff in an interactive information session where staff were able to converse, ask questions, and listen to stories and teachings reflecting the history and significance of Treaty in Maskwacîs. 🤎
This format helped initiate and strengthen relationships between our schools and community. MESC staff walked away with a deeper understanding of how rich Maskwacîs is in history, teachings, and Treaty knowledge — this knowledge surrounds us! ✨
During the afternoon, the developing Treaty curriculum and available resources were also shared with staff for viewing and discussion. 📚
