Protect Our Little Ones: SIDS Awareness 🍼
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is a concern for parents and caregivers across Canada, including right here in Alberta. This October, during SIDS Awareness Month, let’s come together to raise awareness and learn about preventive measures.
❗ What is SIDS?
SIDS is the unexpected and unexplained death of an otherwise healthy baby under one year old during sleep. Understanding SIDS is the first step in preventing it.
💡 Preventive Measures:
Back to Sleep: Always place your baby on their back for naps and nighttime sleep. It’s the safest sleeping position.
Firm Sleep Surface: Use a firm and flat sleep surface, such as a crib, without pillows, soft bedding, or stuffed animals.
Room Sharing: Share your room with your baby, but not the same sleeping surface, for the first six months of life.
📌 Alberta Resources:
Alberta Health Services (AHS): AHS offers a wealth of information on SIDS prevention and safe sleep practices. Visit their website https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/info/Page14359.aspx for info about SIDS
SIDS Calgary Society: If you need support or resources in the Calgary area, reach out to this local organization. https://sidscalgary.ca/resources/
Safe Sleep Workshops: Some communities in Alberta host safe sleep workshops to educate parents and caregivers. Check with local parenting centers or healthcare facilities for upcoming events.
Let’s keep our babies safe and ensure they have the opportunity to grow, thrive, and bring joy to our families. Together, we can make a difference.
