On Treaty 6 anniversary, Indigenous leaders say there’s a long way to go


Ermineskin Cree Nation Chief Craig Makinaw said of the many Treaty 6 breaches, the NRTA is the most significant, as it has left Indigenous
communities without a fair share of the resources and the economic benefits they have brought to federal and provincial governments.

He said some progress has been made in recent years to move closer to the treaty’s original intent,
but progress is often stalled by slow-moving court and justice systems.

“It’s going to be a long, long process,” Makinaw said.
